Hi, my name is Kaitlyn! In Grade 3, I became the youngest member of my school’s Battle of the Books team. This has always been my favorite accomplishment in life, because at the time, I was the new kid. My old school allowed Grade 3’s to be on the Grade 4 team, but my new school had Grade 4’s as the youngest. Because I had already read more than half the books, my new librarian allowed me to try out, but basically told my mother to prepare me to lose. I was up against nine Grade 4’s, ten of us competing for four spots on the Grade 4 team. I tied for the second position, getting 6 out of 8 questions correct! The next year, I earned a spot on the Grade 4 team again.
When I was younger, I used to read all the time. I don’t know what happened along the way - perhaps technology got the better of me! - but whatever it was, I’m hoping to fix that now, by going back to my childhood roots of reading for at least 30 minutes a day (for pleasure, not just for school!). As someone who is currently in school hoping to become an English teacher, my list will consist of YA books, because I love them but also because I’m hoping to get an idea of books I could assign or recommend to my students.
There are other reasons for doing this, for reading more and blogging about it. At the end of the day, I really enjoy reading, I just need to motivate myself to get to a library more often!
